The history of Kvarner dates back to prehistory. The first inhabitants were Liburni. The impact on this area had the Greeks and Romans to the fullest extent. The powerful Roman influence still speak and many cultural remains and historical monuments. Croatians settled this area in the 7th century.

The Region lies next to Istria, and consists of shoreline with islands and mountainous areas.

Rijeka is the center of the region and its famous carnival city, other major cities are Opatija, Crikvenica, Senj, and Lovran. The largest islands are Losinj, Cres, Rab, Pag and Krk which is the largest island in the Adriatic.
